What is happening right now ?

 With constant access nowadays, we come to see first-hand chaotic scenes in America. While the world is quiet and under lockdown, a wave of protest started on May 27th in Minneapolis, and it is spreading to all 50 states of the US. To many, protesting is the only way for them to ensure that the powerful message on the racial divide is heard, especially by the government. The riots and violence were the results of ineffective peaceful protesting on the American justice system. 

Floyd was under arrest because of an alleged counterfeit $20 bill at a convenience store. He was pinned beneath by officer Derek Chauvin for 8 minutes straight, which eventually led to his death. The video showed that Derek Chauvin had his knees on Floyd's neck even when he was already unconscious.

George Floyd’s death wasn’t the only case that led to the movement. Leading up to George Floyd’s trial, there was more evidence provided to reopen cases that involved police brutality towards African-Americans. In 2019, police in the U.S killed 1,099 people, with 24% of that total being African-America (African-Americans only make up 13% of the population). In particular was the case of Breonna Taylor, an African-American EMT in Louisville, Kentucky. Taylor was killed under a no-knock warrant, a right that allows police to search without a warning or identification. Or, it was the case of Elijah McClain, who was killed by the police under suspicion for wearing a ski mask. 

 It was not until the death of George Floyd that people truly acknowledged the racism against African-Americans and BIPOC that existed until this day. Evidence showed that most police brutality cases received little to no attention, or they either got slipped away as self-defense. Historically, The Black Lives Matter movement itself can be traced back to 2012 through the death of Trayvon Martin, 17-year-old at the time. Martin was unarmed and killed by Zimmerman, who disregarded the police's instruction and shot Martin out of suspicion. Later, Zimmerman claimed that it was self-defense and found not guilty, which raised a lot of controversies. In response to the death of Trayvon Martin, the Black Lives Matter was created in 2013 under the premise “to eradicate white supremacy and build local power to intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities by the state and vigilantes.”

Với công nghệ ngày nay, chúng ta có thể dễ dàng thấy được sự hỗn loạn xảy ra ở Mỹ. Trong khi thế giới đang chìm trong im lặng và cách ly xã hội, một làn sóng biểu tình đã nổi dậy vào 25/5 ở Minneapolis và sớm lan rộng ra khắp 50 tiểu bang. Với nhiều người, biểu tình là cách duy nhất giúp họ truyền bá được thông điệp về sự phân biệt chủng tộc, đặc biệt là đến tới chính quyền Mỹ. 

George Floyd đã bị cáo buộc vì sử dụng tờ 20 đô la giả tại một cửa hàng tiện lợi.  Sau đó, ông đã bị một viên cảnh sát người Mỹ, Dereck Chauvin, đè đầu gối lên cổ trong vòng 8 phút liền và dẫn đến cái chết của ông. Trong video, Dereck Chauvin đã giữ đầu gối của mình trên cổ Floyd ngay cả khi ông đã bất tỉnh. Đây chính là nguyên nhân dẫn đến sự phẫn nộ của công chúng để đòi lại công lý cho Floyd. 

Cái chết của George Floyd không phải là vụ án duy nhất dẫn tới phong trào “Black Lives Matter”, nghĩa là “Sinh mạng của người Da Đen cũng đáng giá”. Trong khi xử lý vụ việc của Floyd, các bằng chứng khác đã được đưa ra để mở lại những vụ án về bạo lực của cảnh sát với người Mỹ gốc Phi. Theo thống kê năm 2019, cảnh sát Mỹ đã giết hơn 1,099 người, trong đó bao gồm 24% là người Mỹ gốc Phi (người Mỹ gốc Phi chỉ chiếm 13% dân số). Trong đó đặc biệt là vụ án của Breonna Taylor, một nhân viên cấp cứu tại Louisville, Kentucky. Taylor đã bị giết theo lệnh “no-knock warrant” (lệnh không gõ cửa), đây là lệnh kiểm nhà, hoặc tài sản cá nhân mà không cần cảnh báo. Hay, trong một trường hợp khác của Elijah McClain, anh ta đã bị giết bởi sự nghi ngờ của cảnh sát chỉ vì đeo mặt nạ trên đường về nhà.

Mãi đến cái chết của George Floyd thì người ta mới thấy được sự phân biệt chủng tộc đối với cộng đồng người da màu hiện hữu đến ngày nay. Bằng chứng cho thấy các vụ án về sự tàn bạo của cảnh sát nhận được rất ít sự chú ý, hoặc bị bỏ qua với lý do tự vệ. Lịch sử cho thấy, phong trào “Black Lives Matter” đã có từ năm 2012 từ cái chết của Trayvon Martin, một thanh niên 17 tuổi. Martin đã bị sát hại bởi một người đàn ông tên Zimmerman khi Martin không hề đem theo vũ khí. Zimmerman đã bác bỏ lời chỉ dẫn của cảnh giác và bắn Martin vì sự nghi ngờ của chính mình. Sau đó, Zimmerman khai báo rằng vụ ẩu đả xảy ra do tự vệ và được tuyên bố vô tội. Vụ án này đã gây rất nhiều tranh cãi. Cũng từ cái chết của Trayvon Martin, phong trào Black Lives Matter được thành lập vào năm 2013 dưới tiền đề “huỷ bỏ sự thượng đẳng vì sắc tộc (white supremacy) và xây dựng cộng đồng để chống lại bạo lực đối với cộng đồng da màu.”
